Decoding of images by artificial intelligence

Cone-beam computed tomography (abbreviated as CBCT or dental CT) provides three-dimensional images of the patient's entire dental system. However, in order to use this data for therapy and draw up a detailed treatment plan, the results of this instrumental examination need to be interpreted, i.e. deciphered. By the way, even an experienced dentist can lose sight of some detail when looking at the images. To prevent this from happening, today the decoding of CT scans is delegated to special software. This eliminates the human factor and improves the accuracy and overall quality of diagnostics.

What is Diagnocat?

Diagnocat is a computer program that uses AI technology to determine the condition of the teeth and bone tissue of the jaw. In fact, this software can analyse various diagnostic data used in dentistry, such as panoramic images. However, the most useful and informative is, of course, the interpretation of CT scans.

To produce high-quality results, more than 60,000 CT scans were added to the programme at the development stage, and experienced doctors manually marked all kinds of pathologies on them. Thus, thanks to machine learning, Diagnocat is able to detect problems and does so without human error (it does not miss anything). Thanks to the program's interpretation, the doctor at our clinic will have comprehensive information about the health of the teeth and jaw bones. All that actually remains to be done is to draw up a treatment plan, as well as determine the priorities (sequence) of treatment.

How is CT scan interpretation performed using AI?

First of all, the patient needs to undergo a CT scan of the teeth. If you did not have a CBCT scan in our clinic in Kyiv, you need to provide the results on a digital medium or send us the file in any other way - by email, messengers, etc.

Our doctor uploads the image to the Diagnocat software, after which the data analysis begins. In about 5-7 minutes, the artificial intelligence-based software generates a detailed report on the patient's dental system, identifying even the smallest deviations and abnormalities. When the decoding of CT scans is complete, the doctor and the patient are offered a visual list of problems, namely:

  • caries foci;
  • problems with the gums, including periodontitis and periodontal disease;
  • mistakes during canal filling;
  • various pathologies in the teeth, and soft and bone tissues surrounding the dental unit.

All this data is collected for literally every tooth. The dentist only has to draw up a treatment plan and perform the necessary manipulations.

Why do we use AI image decoding?

Our digital dentistry clinic in Kyiv is focused on high-quality diagnostics and treatment. The CT scan itself is not very informative for the patient. And if the CT scan is decoded, even a non-specialist will see what problems exist. The level of trust in the dentist increases, it is easier for a specialist to explain what therapy is needed, it is possible to clearly show what the pathology is, etc.

In addition to improving the quality of interaction between the patient and the doctor, Diagnocat has other advantages, namely:

  • increases the overall diagnostic accuracy;
  • saves time: the dentist would have to study the CBCT result for a longer time, but here it takes less than 10 minutes;
  • helps to confirm or refute the diagnosis of another specialist.
