Digital dental imprint (3D scan)

Modern dentistry is gradually moving away from the procedure of taking imprints of teeth using special silicone masses (let alone plaster). Instead, a digital imprint of the teeth can be performed. A special intra-oral scanner is used to take multiple photographs of the upper and lower jaw teeth - a dental scan. The software then uses these to create a digital 3D model, which is used for diagnostics, veneers, other prosthetics or braces.

Our DENTART clinic uses a top-of-the-range 3Shape Trios scanner made in Denmark, which has proven its worth in Japan, the United States and Western Europe. The 3Shape Trios is used to diagnose a variety of dental problems, ensuring highly accurate data, while requiring only a few minutes for the entire scanning procedure.

Advantages of digital imprint

It is no coincidence that digital dental scans are actively replacing the traditional procedure of taking imprints using special spoons, silicone masses or plaster. This progressive method has many advantages, including:

  1. Highest accuracy of results and minimal errors, which do not exceed 12 microns (in the case of high-end silicone casts, shrinkage can be up to 100 microns).
  2. Comfort for the patient. The scanner does not touch the teeth, is painless and eliminates the gag reflex and any other discomfort.
  3. Speed. A scan takes up to two minutes, whereas an imprint must be held in the mouth for at least 5-6 minutes. In addition, the digital data obtained can be delivered to the dental laboratory immediately (via the internet), which speeds up the entire treatment procedure.
  4. Additional amenities. Digital images can be zoomed in and out, viewed from any angle, and printed in 2D or 3D (3D printer) if required. In addition, this data is easier to store, transfer to other specialists, etc.
  5. No contraindications to performance. Digital scanning, for example, does not cause allergic reactions.

Where is a digital dental imprint used?

Digital dental scans are in demand in many different areas of dentistry. Appropriate diagnosis today helps to fit veneers or crowns, choose other prosthetic constructions, and decide on a bite correction plan with braces or aligners.

01
Orthopedics
It replaces the traditional making of teeth imprints and allows for benchmark precision in the fabrication of any prosthetic structure, be it crowns, veneers, inlays, bridges, etc.
02
Orthodontists
A digital imprint of your teeth allows you to assess the condition of your bite and draw up a treatment plan with suitable orthodontic appliances.
03
Implantology
Used for diagnostics before implantation as well as for creating surgical templates.
04
Gnathology
The 3-D dental scan helps to identify complex problems of the jaw system and is used to fabricate structures such as splints and braces.

How is a digital dental imprint made?

The procedure is as simple as possible, completely painless and time-saving. We use a 3Shape Trios scanner with which it takes up to 2-3 minutes in total to scan your lower and upper teeth and determine your bite.

During the procedure, the doctor brings a scanner with a special attachment close to each of the patient's teeth to take multiple pictures. Meanwhile, a special programme generates a three-dimensional digital model online on the monitor. The results of the simulation are then analysed by the doctor, who determines a treatment plan and/or sends the data to the dental laboratory.
