Consultation with a periodontist

WHEN IS A PERIODONTAL CONSULTATION NECESSARY?
In the case of periodontal disease, it is important to recognise the early signs of problems and seek immediate dental treatment. Symptoms that should not be ignored include:
- the formation of dark plaque which cannot be removed with a toothbrush or floss;
- bleeding of the gums, caused by brushing regularly and/or using a floss;
- swollen, reddened, and edematous gums that build up on the tooth;
- feeling of itching or pain in the gums;
- exposed tooth root and/or enlarged gaps between teeth;
- an increase in tooth sensitivity in response to both different temperatures (cold or hot food) and types of food (salty, sour, sweet, etc.);
- bad breath;
- tooth mobility.

Why can periodontal disease go unnoticed in other clinics?
These problems go unnoticed due to the lack of manifestations and therefore no complaints from the patient. In addition, not every dentist offers a complete diagnosis of the teeth and oral cavity. This puts you at risk of missing out on asymptomatic periodontal disease even when visiting specialists regularly.
At DENTART in Kyiv, we recommend that all first-time patients undergo computerised tomography (CBCT). If this is done, periodontal disease can be detected in its early stages. For example, the use of CLCT makes it possible to identify the bony changes that accompany periodontitis. Whereas dental X-rays or panoramic dental X-rays are not helpful in diagnosing this pathology.
Our dentists of various specialisations are also initially trained to identify the primary symptoms of periodontal disease. If they notice signs of problems during your appointment, they will refer you to a periodontist for further diagnosis.
What kind of diagnostics does our periodontist perform?
Our doctors perform these diagnostic procedures to confirm/exclude periodontal disease:
- examination of the oral cavity and teeth;
- application of a photographic protocol (photography) at all stages of treatment. Regular photographs allow the effectiveness of therapy to be assessed and the condition of the gums and teeth to be checked;
- determination of periodontal status. For this purpose, our specialists use probing, stain plaque, identify bleeding, the level of tooth mobility, and fill out periodontal files;
- checking of the bone tissue and the condition of the teeth with a CT scan.

How does a periodontist treat periodontal disease?
To treat gum disease, our specialized professionals in Kyiv work closely with surgeons and orthopedists if their intervention is required. In addition, it is extremely important that you also take the problem responsibly and adhere to all recommendations of doctors, because home care is the most important component of the complex treatment of periodontal disease.
For the treatment of periodontal disease, we:
- form a list of products for home care of the oral cavity and teeth;
- teach you how to brush your teeth, how to use a floss and special interdental brushes;
- examine your teeth and gums and make a treatment schedule;
- remove plaque from the teeth;
- perform non-surgical treatment with augmentation to remove deposits under the gums (closed curettage), reduce the depth of periodontal pockets, eliminate inflammation, if any;
- open curettage - a surgical procedure to clean periodontal pockets with deep deposits.
