THE ESSENCE AND ADVANTAGES OF SPLINTING
Dental splinting is a procedure where special splints are fitted to eliminate the problem of mobility of individual teeth or the entire tooth row. The purpose of splinting is to fix movable teeth to prevent the risk of their loss. The advantages of the procedure include:
- the even distribution of stresses during chewing;
- reduced mobility and/or range of motion;
- increased mechanical strength and additional protection against damage;
- the possibility of eliminating interdental gaps;
- the minimisation of the risk of losing a tooth.

When is splinting of movable teeth necessary?
The main indications for fitting special splints on teeth include:
- advanced periodontitis, namely a moderate or severe degree of the disease, accompanied by pathological mobility of the teeth;
- moderate periodontitis, which has not yet caused loosening, but has already resulted in bleeding gums and pronounced root exposure;
- mechanical injuries to the face, including a jaw fracture;
- abnormal tooth position, including congenital absence of individual units, gum recession, etc;
- an incorrect bite, which leads to an inadequate distribution of chewing loads.
You can also have a splint after a bite correction (to consolidate the effect), because the teeth tend to return to their original, incorrect position after the braces have been removed.
Types of splinting of movable teeth
Splinting can be removable and non-removable. In the first case, the splint can be removed for the period of eating or brushing, reinsert it yourself. Splinting of teeth can also be permanent or temporary. In the latter case, the splint is installed for a short period of time (for example, for the period of healing of a jaw injury).
Dental splints are also differentiated by the materials and techniques used to fix the teeth. Popular nowadays are:
