How periodontitis manifests itself: symptoms of the disease
Inflammation of periodontal tissues may go unnoticed for a long time, and its manifestations remain insignificant: there is no pain and the patient is in no hurry to seek help. But as periodontitis progresses, the symptoms become more pronounced, namely:
- there is bleeding and swelling of the gums;
- there is a feeling of itching in the gum area;
- saliva becomes more viscous;
- the gums turn red;
- the neck of the tooth is exposed (tooth pockets appear);
- there is an unpleasant odor in the oral cavity.
If these symptoms are ignored, then the next stage becomes pathological mobility (looseness) of the teeth.
Why does periodontitis occur?
Periodontal inflammation usually provokes the following:
- incorrect/incomplete oral hygiene;
- untreated gingivitis or caries;
- neglected tartar (hard deposits);
- pathologies not related to dentistry (stomach diseases, hormonal failures, diabetes mellitus, etc.).
Diagnosis of periodontitis
The first symptoms can easily be confused with other inflammatory conditions, including gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and stomatitis (inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth). Diagnosis of periodontal tissue conditions includes:
- visual inspection;
- CT of the upper and lower jaw to assess the condition of bone tissues;
- drawing up a periodontal chart;
- other examinations, including smears and blood tests (allow to identify the causes of the inflammatory process, the presence / absence of systemic pathologies).
Periodontitis treatment at DENTART
The method of treatment depends on the stage of the disease and the cause of the inflammation of the periodontal tissues. The emphasis in our treatment is on an integrated approach. The main methods of therapy used include:
- caries treatment;
- professional hygiene and sanitation of the oral cavity, including removal of plaque and stone;
- SPR scaling and root polishing. This method is considered the gold standard of conservative periodontology. It consists of removing tartar and infected tissue under the gum using dental curettes. The surface of the tooth root is also polished. Scaling eliminates existing deposits and reduces gum recession, and thanks to the polishing performed, it adheres better to the tooth surface.
In the acute phase of periodontitis, the implantation procedure is contraindicated. But it is possible and even recommended when in remission and with the problem of loose teeth. Thus, implantation in periodontitis is a more preferable way of restoring lost teeth than installing a bridge with support on other movable teeth.
