Orthopantomogram (OPTG)

An orthopantomogram (OPTG), or panoramic dental picture, is one of the basic dental diagnosis methods allowing us to assess the overall dentoalveolar system’s condition. It is often prescribed after the initial examination, either on its own or as part of a comprehensive examination, along with a CT scan and/or scans of specific teeth.

DENTART clinic in Kyiv uses a modern orthopantomograph. The equipment emits minimum radiation (up to 0.02 m3v, when the annual allowable amount of radiation is 150 m3v), which means it guarantees 100% safety for you. You can make an appointment for a panoramic dental X-ray on the website or over the phone.

When is a panoramic picture of my teeth necessary?

Our dentists prescribe OPTG during the initial examination before therapeutic, surgical, orthodontic treatment. Reasons for a panoramic image of the maxillary system are suspected dental problems like:

  • hidden caries (foci cannot be evaluated visually);
  • neoplasms (granulomas and cysts);
  • diseases in the canals;
  • periodontal diseases (peri-dental tissues);
  • inflammatory diseases requiring tooth extraction.

Besides, panoramic imaging may be required for:

  • preparation for implantation (to analyze the condition of bone tissue);
  • bite correction (in combination with teleradiography, to choose a suitable type of orthodontic structure);
  • preparation for prosthetics;
  • examination before surgery.

Contraindication for these diagnostics is pregnancy (especially the first and the third trimesters).

You should also keep in mind that computerized tomography provides a more informative and accurate examination of the maxillary and mandibular system. Our clinic in Kyiv is also equipped with a CT scanner.

What is the panoramic picture of my teeth needed for?

OPTG allows us to reveal:

  • carious cavities;
  • inflammatory processes;
  • neoplasms;
  • exact position of missing (retained) teeth;
  • bone height and density;
  • bone and periodontal pathologies;
  • quality of root canal filling.

In many cases, this is enough for the doctors at DENTART to make an accurate diagnosis and to plan further treatment. And if required, the OPTG can be supplemented by a comprehensive diagnostic examination.

Benefits of panoramic imaging

OPTG is widely used in dentistry because it is:

  • cheaper than CT scans or even several targeted radiographs of individual teeth;
  • fast method of examination: it takes few minutes to clarify the diagnosis and/or form a treatment plan;
  • safe: radiation doses are minimal and not harmful, allowing even children to undergo the procedure;
  • giving a high quality image;
  • overall assessment of the condition of the oral cavity and teeth;
  • saved in an electronic medium and the results can be used further by doctors.
