Many parents are sure that prosthetics is only for adults, or it is definitely not necessary to put dentures on baby teeth. They will soon fall out, why waste time and money, and even take the child to the dentist once again.
In fact, crowns for children are an effective method of treatment that preserves children's teeth. Thanks to them, temporary units will be able to perform their functions until the natural change to permanent ones. So, baby teeth are needed for:
- ensuring effective chewing of food;
- formation of speech and correct diction;
- saving space for a permanent tooth.

A crown for temporary teeth or a filling?
Suppose parents realize why it is necessary to "fight" for the preservation of a temporary tooth. But then the question arises — why then not a filling? For a long time in Ukraine, crowns for baby teeth were not readily available, so almost all pediatric dentists put fillings. But they are really effective only in situations with minor damage to the teeth.
Crowns on baby teeth, on the other hand, are indicated when:
- destruction of 50% of tooth tissues and more;
- caries damage of several children's teeth at once (filling usually does not provide 100% protection against further spread of the carious process);
- aggressive course of caries;
- the endodontic (root canal) treatment performed on deciduous teeth;
- diagnosed bruxism;
- difficult/insufficient home hygiene caused by various factors. In this case, the risk of developing secondary caries under the filling is high.
Selection and installation of children's crowns
Prosthetics in children is a simpler procedure than in adults. There is no need to make casts or imprints — the child is matched with the optimum design from a universal set for the different age groups. Therefore, crowns are usually fitted in one visit.
Local anaesthesia or sedation (for sleep treatment) can be used for anaesthesia in Kyiv. The crown itself is fixed with dental cement. Thereafter, the denture serves until the temporary tooth falls out on its own.
