Restoration of milk teeth

Restoration of milk teeth is a procedure for restoring their shape and functionality. It is no less important than similar dental procedures on permanent dentition. If milk teeth are left untreated, in addition to the child's lack of self-confidence and peer bullying, the risk of malocclusion and speech defects increases.

If your child has a crack, darkened enamel or developed caries, be sure to visit a paediatric dentist at the DENTART clinic in Kyiv. Come immediately to the initial appointment or make an appointment for an adaptation visit so that your child does not have fears of doctors. We will choose the best method for you to restore the beauty and health of your child's smile.

How is restoration of primary teeth performed at DENTART?

An experienced paediatric dentist of our Dent Art clinic will find an approach to any child. If necessary, we can conduct adaptation visits before treatment. If simple manipulations are performed, the child can simply watch cartoons on a TV set in front of the dental chair while the doctor is working. Complex methods of restoration of milk teeth, if necessary, are carried out under conditions of medication sleep (infant sedation).

Why does premature tooth decay occur in children?

Eruption of milk teeth begins at about six months of age, after which they should last up to 5-14 years. Normally, their loss occurs before the eruption of permanent units. But sometimes you can't do without treatment of a milk tooth or its restoration. The main reasons for this are:

  • unbalanced diet of the child, including the excessive consumption of sweets and soda;
  • poor home hygiene;
  • injuries;
  • poor ecology;
  • genetic factor.

Why is restoration of milk teeth necessary?

The restoration of permanent teeth in children and adults does not raise any particular questions, but in the case of the primary dentition, misconceptions often arise. Many parents think that since these teeth are temporary and they have replacements, restoration of milk teeth is a waste of time and money. But this is not true.

Restoration and treatment of a baby tooth is an effective way to prevent potential problems with the formation of permanent teeth or bite pathology. Thus, even a single loss will cause the rest of the time series to shift, and such deformities will force parents to go with their child not to a paediatric dentist, but to an orthodontist in Kyiv.

Restoration of milk teeth is also necessary for:

  1. Preserving the aesthetics of a smile and preventing psychological problems due to ridicule in kindergarten, school, and in the yard.
  2. Prevention of the development of inflammatory diseases of the rudiments of permanent teeth.
  3. Proper development of speech function. Early loss of milk teeth can cause problems with diction.
  4. Protecting adjacent teeth from excessive pressure, enamel abrasion, etc.

Indications for the restoration of milk teeth

  • chipped enamel, dentin damage;
  • severe tooth injuries;
  • caries, including advanced caries with the need for root canal treatment;
  • any aesthetic defects of the smile area that cause anxiety and/or psychological insecurity of the child (diastema, darkening of the enamel, etc.);
  • the risk of losing a tooth before it is naturally replaced by a permanent unit for other reasons.

Methods of restoration of milk teeth

The appropriate restoration method depends on the extent of the damage and other individual characteristics. In the case of severe decay or advanced cavities, it is necessary to remove the pulp and perform root canal treatment before restoration. This is often due to the fact that the neurovascular bundle is too close to the enamel surface. In this case, if you simply place a filling and do not perform root canal treatment, the risk of developing pulpitis increases.

The main methods include:

1
Filling
The defect is eliminated by composite material. This is the best option in case of minor injuries and microtraumas.
2
Crowns
Such restoration of baby teeth is used in case of severe damage to the teeth, when it is no longer advisable to use fillings. These are reliable restorations made of metal alloys or acrylics (the material is selected individually).
