Bone grafting (osteoplasty)

Bone grafting (or osteoplasty) is a surgical procedure to increase bone volume. It acts as a preparatory stage of implantation and may be required by many patients. Bone grafting can be used to "strengthen the bone", to form a strong "foundation" for the subsequent implantation. And this is the key to its reliability and durability.

Do you need bone grafting in Kyiv? Contact our clinic DENTART. Our surgeons regularly perform osteoplastics, including sinus lifts and other manipulations before implantation. We use modern equipment for diagnosis and treatment and provide you with comfortable and pain-free procedures, thanks to modern sedation techniques. When is bone grafting needed?

The decision on the need for bone grafting is made by a dentist based on the examination of the patient and the diagnosis. For one-stage implants immediately after a tooth extraction, this preparatory step is usually unnecessary. But there are enough situations when bone grafting is mandatory:

  • when more than 10-12 months have passed after tooth extraction. In this case, it is highly likely that the bone block has thinned considerably, causing it to need plasticisation;
  • if a traumatic removal was performed earlier. We do not use such methods in our clinic — only atraumatic removal, as a result of which the bone remains intact;
  • with bone atrophy. It can be triggered by conditions such as gum disease and periodontitis;
  • if there was a serious injury to the jaw.

Types of bone grafting

Our surgeons perform all the bone grafting operations used today, including:

  • sinus lifting. This is a bone graft of the upper jaw, or rather its lateral sections. The maxillary sinuses are located close enough here, so that if there is a shortage of bone material, it is necessary to increase it. There are two types of sinus lifting: closed (more gentle) and open;
  • bone grafting of the frontal part of the jaw. In fact, this is the smile area, so when performing such operations, it is necessary not only to increase the volume of the bone for implantation, but also to get good aesthetic results;
  • bone grafting of the lower jaw on the sides. An implant is not placed until the bone deficit in these areas has been compensated for. In this case, there is also an increased likelihood of malocclusion: the molars may shift forward, which is another reason for bone grafting.

How is bone grafting performed in DENTART?

Relatively recently, bone grafting was considered a complicated operation that was best avoided. Today the situation has changed. Experienced surgeons at our clinic perform this procedure on a regular basis.

Augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis, i.e. directly in the dentist's surgery. The procedure will be painless for you, as local anaesthesia or deep sedation for sleep treatment is used.

In terms of the implementation of bone grafting, there are two main types:

  1. Bone block transplantation. The indication for this operation is a tissue deficit not only in height but also in width. The specialist first takes bone material from the patient's chin or the area of the missing wisdom teeth and then implants it in the right place. Using your own bone material increases the chances of engraftment. The implant is usually placed six months or a year after the plastic surgery.
  2. Splitting the bone. Such operations are used when there is a lack of bone thickness. It is split and strengthened with special materials, and after this an implant is placed immediately or over time.

Recovery from bone grafting is fairly rapid. Minimal bleeding, mild swelling and soreness are expected immediately after the manipulation. However, these unpleasant phenomena will quickly go away if you follow all the recommendations suggested by our doctor.
