Tooth cyst removal
A tooth cyst is a dense neoplasm in which infections multiply due to the inflammatory process, root cells die off, pus forms. To prevent the inflammation from spreading, our body tries to "seal" it, resulting in the formation of a kind of capsule. At first, the neoplasm does not manifest itself and causes no discomfort, but if left untreated, any weakening of the immune system can lead to an aggravation and enlargement of the capsule, which may result in the loss of a tooth or even several teeth.

What causes a cyst?
The main reasons for the appearance of such a neoplasm include:
- poor-quality canal treatment. If endodontists make a mistake in their work, an infection can enter the root canals, which leads to the formation of a cyst;
- a complication of the later stages of dental caries. For example, if carious processes are not stopped in time and canals are not treated, this can also cause a cyst to appear;
- injury of the tooth. Trauma can also trigger an inflammatory process in bone and soft tissues;
- the presence of microscopic lateral branches from the main root canal, which are not visible on X-rays, but may harbour micro-organisms that cause inflammation.
How to diagnose a cyst?
Treatment or removal of a cyst? Is it possible to save a tooth?
Approximately 10 years ago, a cyst meant the need for tooth extraction. But modern dentistry has made great strides since then. At DENTART Clinic, the priority is to choose a treatment method that will get rid of the cysts, preserving the tooth row.
The choice of techniques depends on the location of the neoplasm, the stage of inflammation, and other individual characteristics of each person. About 80% of cystic teeth can be saved, which is a good indicator of the quality of our dentists' work in Kyiv.
What methods do we use to treat cysts?
Two fundamentally different treatment options are possible: therapeutic, which is handled by our endodontists, and surgical, which is handled by dental surgeons. Let's look at these options in more detail.
The therapeutic method is possible when the cyst size does not exceed 8 mm. In this case, we perform a re-treatment of the channels of the tooth. Channels are cleaned and disinfected. At the end, repeated filling of the canal is performed, followed by restoration of the anatomical shape of the tooth.
Tooth-preserving operations. There are three main surgical methods:
- cystectomy. Complete removal of neoplasms from soft or bone tissues. Local anesthesia and magnification work are used. The surgeon opens the focus of inflammation, cleans its contents, performs antiseptic treatment and sews the capsule;
- cystotomy. This is a partial removal procedure for large neoplasms. Subsequently, the remaining part of the cyst, connecting with a healthy epithelium, changes its structure and becomes harmless;
- hemisection. The third method, in which the dental root and its crown part are removed together with the capsule. It is used in cases where the cyst affects one of the channels (roots) of multi-root teeth. The focus of inflammation with part of the root canal is removed, and the resulting cavity is filled with artificial bone material. The duration of the procedure depends on the condition of the bone tissue and the size of the neoplasm. Full recovery takes up to 10 days.
What is normal after a cyst has been removed?
When the removal procedure is completed, you need to carefully monitor your well-being. What is the norm in such a case:
- the appearance of edema, which should subside after the second day;
- a rise in body temperature to 38 degrees;
- soreness or difficulty opening the mouth.
If the swelling does not go down, the temperature rises higher or you have other complaints, you should immediately contact your doctor and/or make an appointment at our clinic.
