Frenectomy

Tongue frenectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed in the oral cavity. In this procedure, our dentist-surgeon will incise the vertical membrane (frenulum) underneath the tongue to allow the organ to move normally.

Often, abnormal frenulum formation is detected and corrected during childhood, including in newborns (for sucking difficulties) or later (for problems with speech development). But sometimes this congenital abnormality is not detected immediately, and the need to correct the defect arises in adulthood.

If you are interested in frenectomy, then you should definitely apply to our clinic DENTART in Kyiv. Our dental surgeons carry out these procedures on adults quickly, efficiently and without pain, using modern anaesthesia. To find out all the details, book an appointment with our specialists online or by phone.

Indications for frenectomy in adults

Reasons for minimally invasive frenetic excision in adults include the following:

  • diction problems, including lisping or other speech defects. They are caused by a short frenulum and a lack of mobility in the tongue;
  • bite pathologies. In some cases, a tongue frenum can cause misalignment of the front teeth or other orthodontic abnormalities;
  • difficulty chewing and/or swallowing food;
  • deviations from normal facial proportions as well as a crooked smile;
  • planned orthopaedic treatment. Tongue frenulum abnormalities can interfere with the placement of prostheses in adults and the elderly. In this case, plastic surgery is recommended before prosthetics. It significantly increases overall comfort and reduces the period of getting used to the prosthesis.

There are also contraindications to cutting the frenulum of the tongue, including:

  • abnormalities in blood clotting;
  • infectious diseases, including colds in the period of exacerbation;
  • inflammatory processes in the oral cavity.

In this case, you should treat any pre-existing medical conditions before plastic surgery.

How do we do frenectomy?

The essence of the minimally invasive procedure is trimming, i.e. making a small incision in the frenulum, which will lengthen the membrane and increase the mobility of the tongue. After the plastic surgery, you will be able to move your tongue more freely around the oral cavity, lift it higher, and easily touch the palate, even if the mouth is open. This will have a positive effect on diction, improve the process of chewing food, etc.

A frenectomy performed by a DENTART dental surgeon involves the following sequence of steps:

  • preparation with the application of antiseptic agents and local anaesthetic;
  • performing a neat minimal frenulum incision;
  • suturing.

In total, the procedure takes about 5-10 minutes and the patient does not need to be observed by the dentist for a long time, so you can get back to your normal routine almost immediately.

Rehabilitation after frenectomy

In adults, the recovery period after this minimally invasive procedure takes no more than 2-3 days. During this time, it is worth following simple recommendations from our dental surgeons, and this will speed up rehabilitation.

The aim of all restorative procedures is to speed up the healing period of the oral mucosa after frenectomy and to avoid any complications. The basic recommendations are as follows:

  1. Use antiseptics in the first few days after the procedure. Antihistamines, which eliminate the risk of allergies and/or severe swelling, and painkillers may also be prescribed. But remember that only the dentist prescribes medications.
  2. On the day of the frenectomy, you should limit physical activity. You should not go to a gym or fitness club, exercise, etc.
  3. Two to three days after the manipulation, do not eat foods that may irritate or damage the mucosa, including carbonated drinks and foods that are too hot or cold.
  4. There is no need to rush through meals: it is best to chew slowly and carefully, so that it does not get under your tongue if possible.
  5. Do special myogymnastics from the second day after frenectomy.
