How do we treat tooth decay using the icon method? What is the essence of the method?
ICON is a chemical-mechanical treatment of carious surfaces of tooth enamel. In other words, special gels and an infiltrant preparation, a polymer-based resin, are applied to the carious area. The latter gets into the smallest tubules of dentin and enamel and clogs the pathogens, as a result of which they are killed. Drilling and filling is not necessary.
At the DENTART Clinic in Kyiv, the possibility of applying the ICON method is determined during the initial examination. Actually, this is the preparatory stage for the procedure. The further sequence of actions with ICON is as follows:
- a gel is applied to the affected tooth tissue, which eliminates carious lesions on the enamel;
- the cleaned area is dried;
- an infiltrant preparation is applied, which blocks the pathological process and stabilises the enamel pores;
- the tooth is given a final polish.
Who is icon suitable for?
This is the safest possible cavity treatment option. It is approved for virtually all patients, including children, pregnant women and those with allergies for whom it is difficult to find an appropriate anaesthetic for traditional methods.
However, ICON is not used for deep carious lesions as it is not effective. Consequently, a different therapy will then be required.
