Air Flow is an innovative method of removing existing plaque by using a special device that uses an air flow to clean the teeth with a mixture of cleaning powder and water. This procedure is safe and comfortable. It is one stage of oral hygiene, along with removal of hard dental plaque, polishing, and additional fluoridation for hypersensitive teeth.

When is AIR FLOW a good idea?
The major indications for this type of cleaning are:
- presence of dental deposits;
- discolouration of teeth caused by food colourings (coffee, red wine, various fruits, etc.) or cigarettes;
- prevention of gum and periodontal disease;
- upcoming therapeutic treatments (removal of dental plaque reveals early decay of the teeth);
- before bleaching;
- the need to clean crowns, veneers and other existing restorations;
- before prosthetics and braces, plus for the subsequent effective cleaning of these structures.
Since Air Flow is part of professional hygiene, this dental cleaning is recommended every six months. An individual schedule can be coordinated with your dentist.
How is the AIR FLOW procedure done?
The cleaning is performed with a special machine. It applies high pressure to the teeth and gums with an aerosol mixture of cleaning powder, air and water. To protect the eyes from the solution, the patient is asked to wear goggles.
The dentist-periodontist removes the plaque, while his assistant helps remove the mixture from the mouth. Finally, a gel is applied to the teeth containing fluoride, which strengthens enamel and reduces its sensitivity. After the treatment, you should not smoke or eat (drink) any food containing bright colours for a few hours.
The Air Flow method allows the use of different cleaning powders, which provide the desired results. The following aerosol mixtures are used at Dent Art Clinic in Kyiv:
- fine-dispersed. These are used for cleaning sensitive teeth. Here, the procedure is the gentlest;
- polishing. Used in cases of slight pigmented plaque, which is easily removed. This version of the mixture is suitable for patients with good oral hygiene;
- abrasive. Showed when the deposits are very hard, i.e. when the patient is a smoker or has had no professional hygiene treatment for a long time. Using gentle compositions in such cases rarely gives the best results.
Note that even the abrasive powders in Air Flow will not damage the enamel, as the particles in the aerosol mixture are denser than the protective coating on the tooth. That is why this procedure at DENTART is safe.
Does AIR FLOW also bleach teeth?
This method is not a whitening procedure, but it does whiten your teeth by 1-2 shades. It achieves this by removing pigments and leaving a natural-looking enamel. In fact, the whitening effect is provided by high-class cleaning and removal of food dyes.
Are there any contraindications to AIR FLOW?
This method of dental cleaning is not used in the following cases:
- Serious systemic diseases, including hepatitis, tuberculosis, HIV, bronchial asthma and other respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
- Allergic to ingredients in polishing compounds or soda.
- There are areas of demineralisation on the teeth.
Air Flow dental cleaning can be temporarily postponed if there is an infectious disease.
