Two-stage (classical) dental implantation

  • We handle the most complex dental cases
  • Highest dental implant success rates
  • The most proven and predictable technology

Two-stage dental implantation is a classic restoration procedure. It is used for any number of lost teeth, up to full adentia, and involves a pause (3 to 6 months) between the implant being placed in the jaw and the fixed denture being fitted. This method is considered the most predictable and the safest, as the risk of rejection of the artificial root is extremely low (less than 1%).

In our clinic Dent Art in addition to one-stage dental implantation, two-stage implantation is also performed in Kyiv. The extensive experience of our implantologists and the use of advanced technology and materials guarantee you perfect aesthetics and maximum longevity of the results.

The main advantages of two-stage dental implants

  1. The most studied and predictable technology. It has been used in dental practice for almost half a century.
  2. Impeccable aesthetic results.
  3. Maximum engraftment rates (close to 100%) and a lifetime warranty on implants from the world's leading manufacturers.
  4. Versatility. The technique can be used in almost any situation, from a single loss to complete adentia. Plus, this technique will ensure durability at high chewing loads.
  5. Allows dentures (bridges) to be placed on the artificial root instead of the natural tooth.

In addition, the time gap provides the patient with additional financial flexibility. A kind of instalment payment instead of a one-off expenditure.

How is a two-stage implantation performed?

The following treatment steps are foreseen for two-stage implantation:

  1. Preparatory stage with a general examination of the patient. A computerized tomography is performed and the jaw and jaw system is examined. Blood samples are also taken. Oral hygiene is performed, including treatment of gums, tooth decay, and removal of tartar. Implants are also chosen at this stage.
  2. Bone augmentation (if necessary). If the amount of bone is reduced (atrophy), osteoplastic surgery may be required, including a sinus elevator. Bone grafting is most often required in situations where the patient decides to restore a lost tooth, not immediately, but over time. This causes atrophy, and the amount of bone becomes insufficient to support an artificial root.
  3. Implantation itself. An artificial root is implanted in the jawbone, and the stitches are applied.
  4. Gum Former. After the implant is fully engrafted (after 3-6 months), the gums are exposed, and a guide is inserted for 7-14 days, to create the correct contour of the gums around the future crown.
  5. Prosthetics begins with the placement of a special connecting element (abutment) between the implant and the prosthetic structure.
  6. The final stage is placement of the crown.

If bone augmentation is needed, the two-step implantation can take up to 8 months. But the long procedure also guarantees long-lasting results. At our DENTART clinic in Kyiv you get a perfect new tooth, which is indistinguishable from the real one.

Reliability of classic implantation

The two-stage approach is the most thoroughly studied and predictable way to restore teeth. At DENTART, implant survival rates with this method are virtually absolute—approaching 100%. Because the crown is placed after a 3–6 month healing period, the implant achieves benchmark stability: the titanium post fully integrates with the jawbone, ensuring long-term results.

Here, the rule holds that a longer overall treatment timeline (in some cases, including prior bone grafting, the total can reach 6–8 months) delivers the highest reliability. And all of this comes with benchmark aesthetics and excellent function—a flawless smile ready for significant chewing loads.

Classic (Two-Stage) Implantation
Immediate Implantation
  • Highest reliability and predictability
The safest, most predictable, and reliable implant method, with a near-100% integration rate.
  • Suitable for most cases
The two-stage approach can be used in almost any case, including marked bone loss (after bone grafting).
  • Benchmark aesthetics
It enables precise gingival contouring and delivers an appearance virtually indistinguishable from a natural tooth.
  • More visits and time
The crown is placed 3–6 months after implant placement.
  • Less predictable results
Immediate implantation carries a slightly higher risk of implant failure and more potential side effects.
  • More limited indications
This approach has more contraindications and limiting factors that restrict when it can be used.
  • Fast aesthetic solution
It doesn’t leave the patient without a tooth—even for a day.
  • A new tooth in a single visit
Immediately after extraction, the implant is placed and a temporary crown is typically fitted.

When is conventional (two-stage) implantation preferable?

Two-stage implantation offers a high level of reliability and predictable outcomes. It is therefore recommended in the following situations:

  1. 1. Need to replace several teeth at once.
  2. 2. Restoring teeth that bear the greatest chewing loads, especially the eight primary molars (the main chewing teeth).
  3. 3. Significant bone deficiency requiring sinus lifting or other bone grafting procedures to augment tissues.
  4. 4. Chronic inflammatory conditions of the gums or other oral tissues.
  5. 5. Complex tooth extraction that makes immediate implantation impossible.
  6. 6. Other contraindications and/or elevated complication risks that limit alternative protocols.
  7. 7. Previous unsuccessful implant attempts (e.g., cases of implant failure/rejection).
Questions and answers
  • Why is classic implantation more reliable?

The two-stage approach—with a healing interval between implant placement and crown installation—promotes high-quality osseointegration of the titanium post, reduces the risk of failure (success rates approach 100%), minimizes side effects, and improves implant stability and bonding with the surrounding bone. It is also backed by safety, predictable outcomes, and more than 50 years of successful use in dental practice.

  • Who is conventional implantation suitable for?

The classic two-stage method is highly versatile and can be recommended for most patients—from single-tooth replacement to full arch (complete edentulism). Given the longer overall timeline, it may be less appropriate only when immediate smile aesthetics are critical (e.g., for public-facing professionals such as TV hosts, actors, or lecturers).

  • How many stages are there in conventional implantation?

There are two main stages: the surgical stage (implant placement), and the prosthetic stage (crown placement). You can also distinguish a “stage zero”—preparation—which always includes diagnostics and may involve therapeutic treatment (e.g., caries management) and/or bone grafting procedures to augment the bone.

  • How long after implant placement is the crown installed?

In the classic protocol, the crown is placed 3–6 months after the implant surgery. The exact interval is individualized, since the time required for osseointegration depends on factors such as patient age, bone volume and density, harmful habits, coexisting conditions, and the implant system used, among others.
