Lingual invisible braces
Lingual braces are a type of braces that are not placed on the outside (vestibular) side of the teeth, but on the inside. These braces are also called invisible braces: they are not noticed while smiling, laughing or talking.
We recommend lingual braces for those who need their teeth corrected inconspicuously. It is an option for the public, including television or educational employees, artists, and athletes.

The main features of lingual braces
Lingual braces are fixed on the inside of the teeth, and the forces that redistribute pressure and shift the teeth act on that side. Besides the fact that they are invisible to others, there are purely medical advantages, including:
- the ability to achieve better results when correcting a deep bite;
- the risk of breakage of lingual braces due to mechanical impact is minimised (relevant for athletes);
- negative changes in enamel (damage, staining) are not visible, unlike traditional vestibular braces.
Sometimes, lingual systems cannot be used, including those with low crowns or insufficient surface area for secure retention. Also, lingual braces are not suitable for severe periodontal disease or functional problems with the temporomandibular joint.

Preparation, fitting and adaptation period for lingual braces
Before our orthodontists fix invisible braces, oral hygiene and comprehensive treatment are necessary. Dental caries removal, removal of existing inflammation, and oral hygiene treatment are essential.
The procedure for placement of traditional (vestibular) and lingual braces is different. In the latter, the inner surface of each tooth must be scanned, and a special design based on the anatomy of the lingual dentition is fabricated. This is necessary, because there are more structural features on this side than on the outside. Therefore, the price of lingual invisible braces is higher.
From an aesthetic point of view, such an option of bite correction is virtually irreproachable. However, the lingual braces may require longer change periods due to their position on the inside of the tooth.
Some patients report that the initial period after treatment with lingual braces may be difficult to adjust to:
- Excessive salivation;
- Tongue injury (also common with conventional braces);
- Longer term sensation of a foreign body in the mouth;
- Temporary changes in diction. Pronunciation is the most common problem with lingual braces, and there could be a problem with hissing sounds;
- Individual oral hygiene problems.
As the practice of our orthodontists in Kyiv shows, the period of full change to lingual braces rarely exceeds 2 weeks. In rare cases, adaptation is delayed for 3-4 weeks.
How long should invisible braces be worn and how should they be cared for?
One of the characteristic features of lingual braces is the prime requirement for proper hygiene. The frequency, diligence, and time spent on care must increase with the wearing of any braces. Invisible braces are no exception. Cases of gingivitis or gum inflammation occur less frequently when wearing these systems. This is because saliva naturally cleans lingual braces and the tongue.
The orthodontists at our DENTART Clinic will provide comprehensive care instructions on the day of lingual braces placement, and offer you a special hygiene kit for at-home care. This includes special brushes, rinses and other supplies that help remove food particles under the arch and around the braces.
The period of use of lingual braces is individual and depends on the initial problem and the goals to be achieved. On average, you will need to wear them for 1-1.5 years.
