Types of braces by design features

The brace system comprises two key components - an orthodontic arch and braces that secure the construction of the teeth. A metal arc corrects the bite, i.e. the displacement of the teeth in the desired direction. However, it can be anchored with or without ligatures, i.e. wire or elastic bands. There are two groups of bracket systems:

Ligatures brace system

Ligatures brace system
There is a third additional element - ligatures. They hold the arc in the grooves of the braces. Ligatures need to be changed approximately once a month, which can be considered a disadvantage of these systems. Plus, elastic rings often stretch and the arches lose their strength before the next visit to the orthodontist, and the entire process of bite correction takes longer. Ligature braces are cheaper than self-ligating ones (except for lingual variations). These braces are the best choice if you have:
  • complex pathology that requires constant monitoring by the doctor (ligature braces are more “controllable” compared to self-ligating systems);
  • there are no hygiene and care issues (ligature systems are more difficult and time-consuming to clean);
  • there are financial limitations.

Self-ligating braces

Self-ligating braces
This is a more advanced design, where the braces themselves have elements (special locks) for fixation of the orthodontic arch. The arch can be easily moved in the bracket slots, allowing the removal of the bite without having to remove the teeth. The treatment is quicker: it takes from one and a half to three years. Self-ligating braces are compact and smooth, so the wear and cleaning procedure is more comfortable. Plus, they are less visible and reduce the number of obligatory visits to the DENTART orthodontist in Kyiv.

Self-ligating braces are versatile and suitable for almost all patients, but they are more expensive than the ligature braces.

Types of braces according to the method of fixation

In the past, orthodontic appliances were only placed on the outside of the teeth, but today it is possible to hide them. Lingual systems are used for this purpose, and they are concealed behind the teeth. A distinction is made between:

1
External (vestibular)
This is a classic option. The variation in how the arch is attached to the retainers is different, and the external braces can be self-ligating or ligature braces. Even if translucent materials are used, they will be visible. External braces are more versatile, so they can cope with almost any bite problems. Vestibular braces are used if:
  • invisibility and aesthetics are not required;
  • You have small teeth that will not allow you to fit lingual systems;
  • You have a narrow jaw.
2
nternal (lingual)
Such braces are exclusively ligature. Braces are selected individually, so that they perfectly repeat the relief of the teeth from the inside. Such braces are as inconspicuous as possible. But the bite treatment will not be so fast, and these constructions are not suitable in all situations. Lingual braces are best for:
  • people in public, for whom a beautiful smile is crucial;
  • athletes at risk of facial injuries (external systems are not suitable for them);
  • patients with large teeth and/or jaws (who are more comfortable to wear).

Types of braces according to the materials of manufacture

Today, braces are diverse in terms of fabrication materials. The following systems are used:

1
Meta
This is one of the most versatile materials. Different metals and alloys can be used, from stainless steel to gold. The main advantages are hypoallergenic properties and mechanical strength. Metal retainers are also food inert and easy to clean. Such systems are most suitable for those who need comfort when wearing them.
2
Ceramic
They are also designed for aesthetic dentistry. Ceramic braces are white (like teeth). Ceramics are inferior in strength to sapphire, so the possibility of damage (chipping), especially around the grooves, is still higher. It is therefore recommended to limit or avoid very hard foods during orthodontic treatment with ceramic systems. This option is also optimal for those who want their braces to be as inconspicuous as possible.
3
Sapphire
Synthetic sapphire is used to create these braces. Its main advantage is aesthetics: braces remain clear during the entire period of wearing. These systems are also durable, so the risk of breakage is minimal.
4
Combined
This is a compromise solution. The most common solution is a durable metal bracket on the lower jaw and a combination of metal (on the side teeth) and sapphire or ceramic (on the front teeth) on the upper jaw. Metal and sapphire are used for braces with ligatures, and metal and ceramic are used for self-ligating braces. These braces are recommended for those looking for a compromise between affordability, discreteness and comfort.
